RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987)

Russian-born artist Raphael Soyer is best known for his sensitive penetrating portrayals, and compassionate naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. Like Modigliani, his outer form is both soft and poetic while his inner stucture is firm and solid. Hang one of his works and you will find that the picture emits an atmosphere that soon becomes a dominant feature of the room.Ê Soyer's sense of humanistic passion makes his work special, and his isolated and introspective portraits are universally admired and treasured.

Soyer's works have been collected by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Detroit Institute of Art; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and his works can be found in hundreds of private collections throughout the world. He has enjoyed over three hundred one-man shows and two major museum retrospectives.
